Discovering Saint-Tropez
Saint-Tropez is a village of some four thousand people on the southern shore of the gulf, facing north. That orientation is rare on the Riviera and explains its light. It is what brought Signac here in 1892, and the painters who followed. The harbour, the lanes of La Ponche and the sixteenth-century citadel are all within a half-hour walk.
One thing catches most visitors out. Pampelonne beach is not in Saint-Tropez. It lies in the neighbouring commune of Ramatuelle, a quarter of an hour away by road. The rest of the peninsula is farmland and forest, planted with Côtes de Provence vines, and the coastal path walks the whole way round from the Portalet tower.

Where to stay in Saint-Tropez
The harbour and La Ponche
The historic core, once the fishermen’s quarter, entirely pedestrian. It is the densest address in the village, and the liveliest in season.
The Citadelle
Up on the hill, away from the harbour, with the maritime history museum, the ramparts and the view over the gulf, in a quiet residential pocket.
Place des Lices
Plane trees, pétanque, and the Provençal market on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. Village life happens here rather than on the quay.
Les Parcs de Saint-Tropez
A gated private estate east of the village, between umbrella pines and the sea. The most discreet corner of the commune.
Les Salins and La Moutte
The eastern shore, wilder, with sandy beaches, vines running down to the water and the old customs path linking them.
When to visit Saint-Tropez
April - June
The best window for the coastal path and the vineyards, with long days, a peninsula that still breathes and a sea that is warming up. Les Bravades, the village patronal festival, takes over three days in mid-May.
July - August
The peak. A single-carriageway road serves the whole peninsula, and in August fifteen kilometres can take an hour. Beach clubs work on reservation and the village is crossed on foot.
September - October
The season regulars prefer, when the sea is at its warmest, traffic returns to normal, and Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez fill the gulf with classic yachts.
November - March
The village stays lived-in and the market carries on, but most beach clubs and a share of the restaurants close until Easter. This is the season of bare vines and empty lanes.

Mid-May
Les Bravades
The village patronal festival, in costume and under arms, over three days. It is the oldest and the most Tropezian event of the year.
June
The Giraglia
The offshore race starts from Saint-Tropez before heading for Corsica and Genoa. The harbour fills with racing yachts.
Late September
Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez
Classic and modern yachts race in the gulf for a week. It is the busiest moment of the shoulder season.
Good to know
One road serves the entire peninsula. Everything follows from that. Departure time matters more than distance, and an airport transfer in July or August is best booked outside the middle of the day.
The village centre is pedestrian in season. Staying in the lanes means parking on the edge and carrying luggage the last few metres.
Pampelonne beach clubs are booked ahead, and most close from mid-October to Easter. Out of season the beach is still magnificent, but bare.
