Mougins is a hilltop village eight kilometres from Cannes, its lanes spiralling around the summit. People come for closeness to the sea without the sea itself: the beaches are fifteen minutes away, the quiet is immediate, and the back country starts in the garden.
Picasso spent the last twelve years of his life in Mougins, at the Notre-Dame-de-Vie farmhouse below the chapel of the same name, and died there in 1973. The André Villers photography museum, in the village, holds the portraits made of him by the photographers around him.

Pedestrian, spiral-shaped, with its galleries and tiny squares. You park at the entrance and walk the rest.
The valley below the village, with its chapel and cypress avenue. The most sought-after residential pocket in the commune.
A more recent development on the heights, away from the old village, facing the hills and the Esterel.

The county park, its pinewoods and a pond covered in lotus flowers in summer. The commune’s green lung.
Where the everyday shops are, below the village: what a purely pedestrian old village cannot offer.
March - May
The best moment inland: mimosa then wisteria, easy temperatures and a village still quiet before summer.
June - August
Inland days run hotter than the coast, but the nights are cooler. The Fontmerle ponds are in flower through July and August.
September - October
The most balanced season: the sea is still warm fifteen minutes away, the courses are playable and the village has its rhythm back.
November - February
The village slows and some restaurants close, but the Valmasque forest walks all year and the light stays clear.
February - March
The hills behind Cannes flower before the coast does. This is when the slopes around the village turn yellow.
July - August
The pond in the Valmasque park fills with lotus flowers at the height of summer. The bloom lasts only a few weeks.
All year
Two neighbouring courses make the commune a base for a golfing stay, fifteen minutes from Cannes.
Mougins has no beach: the sea is a quarter of an hour away, which means a car or a transfer for every swim.
The old village is entirely pedestrian and steep. Luggage is carried up from the entrance car parks, in every season.
The roads serving Sophia Antipolis cross the commune: at office hours the run to Cannes or the airport lengthens noticeably.
