Saint Barthélemy is an island of some twenty square kilometres, a French overseas collectivity since 2007. It was Swedish from 1784 to 1878, which is where its harbour town Gustavia gets its name and its layout. You can drive round it in a day, but the roads are narrow and steep: distances here are counted in minutes, never in kilometres.
The beaches set the rhythm. Saint-Jean under the landing path, Gouverneur and Saline left undeveloped, Colombier reachable only on foot or by boat, and the Toiny coast open to the swell. The village of Corossol keeps the memory of the island before tourism.

The harbour and lower town, with its timber houses, its shops and Shell Beach a short walk from the centre.
The central bay, the liveliest on the island, under the airfield approach. Shops and beach on an island scale.
The two southern beaches, with nothing built on the shore. A road takes you close, then a footpath.

Our Travel Advisor knows Saint Barthelemy inside out, with its confidential addresses, local partners and event calendar. Let's talk for a few minutes to craft your stay.
The north-western bay, with no road: you walk down from Petite Anse, or arrive by sea.
The windward coast: surf and swell at Toiny, a sheltered lagoon and wind sports at Grand Cul-de-Sac.
December - April
The dry season, and the island’s high season: steady trade winds, tempered heat, very little rain. Everything is open, and everything is booked far ahead.
May - June
The in-between: numbers fall away, the island stays fully open and sea conditions hold. The best trade-off between climate and quiet.
July - August
Heat and humidity are more pronounced, with local festivities in August. Hurricane season has begun, with no effect in most years.
September - November
The heart of hurricane season. September is traditionally when many businesses close for maintenance: it is the only real lull of the year.
March
Large classic and modern yachts gather in the Gustavia anchorage. The harbour changes shape entirely.
April
The island’s most followed race week, at the close of high season, with exceptionally busy waters.
August
Saint Barthélemy’s day, then Saint Louis at Corossol: local regattas, fireworks and village celebrations, off the tourist circuit.
There is no direct long-haul service: you arrive via Sint Maarten and connect by light aircraft or boat, and that connection should be booked at the same time as the flight.
Flights stop at sunset. A long-haul arriving into Saint Martin late in the day means a night there: it is the most common planning trap.
September is when many addresses close for maintenance. Outside high season, check opening before fixing dates.
