Discovering Cannes
Cannes reads in three layers. The seafront, with the Croisette running two kilometres round the bay. The old town of Le Suquet on its hill, where the Forville market and the Castre museum occupy the site of the medieval castle. And behind them the residential hills of La Californie and Super-Cannes, where the winter-resort era left its Belle Époque villas.
Facing the town, a quarter of an hour by boat from Quai Laubeuf, the Lérins islands change the scale entirely, with Sainte-Marguerite with the fort that held the Man in the Iron Mask, and Saint-Honorat with its Cistercian abbey, where the monks still work the vines. It is the sharpest counterpoint to the Croisette.

Where to stay in Cannes
La Croisette
The seafront, from the Palais des Festivals to Pointe Croisette. Concession beaches, hotels and boutiques the whole way.
Le Suquet
The old town, steep and cobbled, with the Forville market at its foot and the Castre museum watchtower at the top.
La Californie
The residential hill to the east, inherited from the winter-resort era, with walled gardens, period villas and a plunging view over the bay.
Palm Beach and Pointe Croisette
The quieter eastern end of the bay, between Port Canto, the public beaches and the way back to Cannes-Marina.
Le Cannet
The commune above Cannes, backed onto the hills, quieter, ten minutes from the Croisette, and home to the Bonnard museum.
When to visit Cannes
March - May
The trade-fair season opens with the property market in March and peaks with the Festival in May. The town is full, but the sea and the hills stay workable.
June - August
Beach summer, with the shore, the Lérins islands and the fireworks evenings over the bay. Traffic along the seafront slows to a crawl in the late afternoon.
September - October
The Régates Royales bring the classic yachts in September, before the fairs return in October. The sea stays warm and rates ease between shows.
November - February
Unlike the resorts around it, Cannes lives year-round, with shops open, a daily market and an inhabited old town, with empty beaches.

The Festival
A fortnight that closes the Croisette in on itself. It is when the town is at its most expensive and its most constrained.
July - August
The fireworks festival
Several evenings of displays fired from the bay, watched from the Croisette, the hills or the water.
September
Les Régates Royales
Classic yachts race off the Croisette for a week. The best vantage point is Pointe Croisette.
Good to know
Croisette beaches are mostly paying concessions. The large public beaches sit further west, towards Le Midi, and at the eastern end of the bay.
During the big fairs, accommodation tightens and prices rise all around the bay, as far as Antibes and Mandelieu. Those weeks are set months ahead.
Le Suquet is climbed on foot and lived in stairways, and that is worth knowing before choosing an address in the old town.
