Théoule-sur-Mer is backed onto the Esterel massif, on the boundary between the Alpes-Maritimes and the Var. The landscape has nothing to do with the rest of the Riviera: the rock here is a red porphyry that drops straight into a very blue sea, and that contrast is the whole point of the place.
The Corniche d’Or, opened in the early twentieth century, follows this jagged coast as far as Saint-Raphaël. It serves Port-la-Galère, a development of sculpted façades designed by the architect Jacques Couëlle to marry the rock, and the Pointe de l’Aiguille park, which protects the coves south of the village.

The heart of the commune, between La Suveraine beach and the marina, ten minutes from Cannes.
Jacques Couëlle’s sculpted façades, clinging to the red rock above the sea.
The county park south of the village: coves, coastal path and red rock with nothing built on it.

The cove of the old tuna trap, at the foot of the Esterel, on the corniche towards Miramar.
Above: tracks, trails and the Pic du Cap Roux, one of the widest viewpoints on this coast.
March - May
The best season for the Esterel: the trails are workable, the rock has not yet stored the heat and the scrub is in flower.
June - August
Coves are taken early and the corniche gets busy. The massif is often closed to walkers on high fire-risk days.
September - October
The ideal combination: warm sea, trails reopened and a clear corniche. The finest window here.
November - February
The commune goes quiet. The corniche stays open and the massif walks well on clear days, in exceptional light.
Spring
The scrub flowers between March and May, before the heat and the summer access restrictions.
Summer
Pointe de l’Aiguille shelters several coves reachable only on foot from the village.
Autumn
The road from Théoule to Saint-Raphaël is best driven out of season, when the traffic clears.
In summer, access to the forest massifs may be restricted or closed according to the day’s fire risk: the level is published daily by the prefecture.
The corniche is narrow, winding and popular with cyclists: mapping apps tend to be optimistic about journey times here.
Théoule is ten minutes from Cannes but in another landscape. It is the one place among our Riviera destinations where the mountain falls into the sea.
