Valbonne is an anomaly in the back country: instead of the usual hilltop village, a grid plan laid out in the sixteenth century around a thirteenth-century Chalaisian abbey. The streets cross at right angles and open onto the Place des Arcades, where the Friday morning market is held.
The commune also contains Sophia Antipolis, the research park created in the late 1960s, which brought in a lasting international population. The practical consequence: Valbonne lives all year, speaks several languages and does not follow the seasonal rhythm of the coastal resorts. The Brague valley and its gorges begin at the foot of the village.

The sixteenth-century orthogonal layout, the Place des Arcades and the former abbey beside the Brague.
The wooded valley floor, its gorges and its footpaths, immediately below the village.
The research park in the pinewood, minutes away: the activity that keeps the commune alive out of season.
Around the village, terraced with olive trees, close to the area’s international schools.
The neighbouring farmed plateau, planted with olives, between Valbonne and the Grasse country.
March - May
The truest season inland: the Brague is running, the hills are green and the market has its growers back.
June - August
Inland days are hotter than the coast, but the Brague gorges give shade and the sea is twenty minutes away.
September - October
The olive groves prepare for harvest and the commune returns to its school and working rhythm. The heat drops.
November - February
Unlike the seaside resorts, Valbonne does not close: shops open, market held, a village lived in all year.
Fridays, all year
The weekly market is held under the arcades of the central square, winter and summer alike.
Autumn
The plateau between Valbonne, Opio and Châteauneuf is planted with olives; the mills run from November to January.
All year
The path follows the river up from the village: a shaded walk, workable even at the height of summer.
Valbonne is one of the few inland communes that lives all year: a decisive advantage out of season, when the coastal resorts shut.
The commune is markedly international thanks to Sophia Antipolis: English is widely spoken and several international schools are close by.
The village is flat, unlike its perched neighbours: it can be walked end to end, luggage included.
