Discovering Grimaud

Grimaud is two places, and it is worth knowing before booking. On one side the perched medieval village, its stepped lanes and its castle ruins looking over the whole gulf. On the other, down at the water, Port Grimaud.

Port Grimaud is a lagoon town designed by the architect François Spoerry and built from 1966 on marshland, with reinterpreted fishermen’s houses, each with its mooring at the door, linked by canals and bridges. You move around on foot and by water taxi, and the whole is now recognised as twentieth-century architectural heritage.

Where to stay in Grimaud

The medieval village

Perched, cobbled and stepped, with the castle ruins and the view over the entire gulf of Saint-Tropez.

Port Grimaud

The lagoon town and its canals, in three successive quarters. Pedestrian, with a mooring at every door.

Beauvallon

The wooded slope towards Sainte-Maxime, residential and quiet, with its beaches and its historic golf course.

The plain and the vines

Between the village and the sea, with wine estates and country lanes, away from the shoreline.

The gulf beaches

Guerrevieille, Port Grimaud, sand at the head of the gulf, facing Saint-Tropez and sheltered from the swell.

When to visit Grimaud

April - June

The canals of Port Grimaud and the hilltop village can be seen without crowds. The sailing season restarts in the gulf.

July - August

The head of the gulf is busy, but the boat crossing to Saint-Tropez avoids the road entirely.

September - October

Warm sea, quiet canals and low light over the gulf. The best moment for Port Grimaud.

November - March

Port Grimaud empties, part of the shops close, and the medieval village returns to Provençal village life.

The year in brief

  • All year

    Grimaud castle

The ruins command the gulf from the village ridge. The widest viewpoint on the northern shore.

  • Summer

    Village evenings

Night markets and open-air concerts fill the lanes of the hilltop village in July and August.

  • Spring and autumn

    The canals

Port Grimaud is best seen by water taxi. Out of season the lagoon town recovers its original calm.

Good to know

  • Port Grimaud and the hilltop village are five kilometres apart. They are two different stays, and the choice is made at booking.

  • The shuttle boat links Port Grimaud to Saint-Tropez in about twenty minutes, and in summer it beats the gulf road for both speed and certainty.

  • Port Grimaud is pedestrian, and cars stay at the entrance car parks. Luggage finishes the journey on foot or by boat.
