Liberty House selection
Roquebrune-Cap-Martin is layered on three levels between Monaco and Menton. At the top, the medieval village and its keep, one of the oldest preserved in France. At the bottom, Carnolès and its shops. Between them, the wooded, residential peninsula of Cap Martin, which the old customs path rounds at water level.
That path now carries Le Corbusier’s name; he spent his summers in the Cabanon he built for himself in 1952 just above it, beside the E-1027 villa designed by Eileen Gray in the late 1920s. The ensemble is visited under the name Cap Moderne. The architect died swimming off the cape in 1965; he is buried in the village cemetery, under a tomb of his own design.

Perched three hundred metres up, in vaulted lanes, around its keep and its thousand-year-old olive tree.
The wooded residential peninsula, ringed by the customs path, facing Monaco.
The lower quarter on the Menton side: everyday shops, the station and the commune’s longest beach.
Between the cape and Monaco: a small beach, a station and the start of the path to the point.

Above the village, the balcony road towards La Turbie and its Roman trophy, overlooking the whole principality.
March - May
The best season for the cape path and the hilltop village: the climb stays cool and the flowering is at its peak.
April, tournament week
The tennis tournament is played in the commune, at the Monte-Carlo Country Club: traffic towards Monaco feels it all week.
June - August
Beach summer, with Monaco next door. The commune’s beaches are easier to reach than the principality’s.
September - February
The sea stays warm late, then the commune returns to its residential calm, in the sheltered microclimate of the eastern coast.
April
The Monte-Carlo Country Club sits in the French commune, not in Monaco. The week saturates the lower corniche.
All year
Le Corbusier’s Cabanon and Eileen Gray’s villa E-1027 can only be seen on a guided visit, booked in advance.
Autumn
The circuit of Cap Martin takes an hour and a half on foot, at water level, facing Monaco.
The commune is layered: three hundred metres of climb separate the hilltop village from the beach. The address chosen defines the whole stay.
Cap Moderne is visited by booked guided tour in small groups only: arrange it before you travel, not on arrival.
During the April tennis week, access towards Monaco is heavy from morning to evening on the lower corniche.
