Menton is the last French town before Italy, and the most sheltered on the coast: the relief protects it to the north, which gives it a climate reputed to be the mildest in mainland France. That microclimate is what allowed subtropical species to be acclimatised here, and it explains the density of remarkable gardens on such a small territory.
It is also what produced its emblem: the Menton lemon, protected by a geographical indication since 2015, and the festival devoted to it every February since the 1930s. The old town, rising in ochre tiers above the harbour, is crowned by the forecourt of the Saint-Michel-Archange basilica, where a chamber music festival has been held since 1950.

February - March
The lemon festival takes over the town for a fortnight, at the same time as the Nice carnival. It is the Riviera’s winter peak.

July - August
Beach summer, with the music festival on the Saint-Michel forecourt. The town stays quieter than its western neighbours.
September - January
The sea stays warm late, then comes the mildest winter on the French coast, and the citrus harvest.
February
Floats and citrus sculptures in the Biovès gardens, every year since the 1930s.
August
Chamber music concerts on the forecourt of the Saint-Michel basilica, in the open air, since 1950.
Spring
Serre de la Madone and Val Rahmeh are at their best between March and May, before the heat.
The Italian border is ten kilometres away: the Friday market in Ventimiglia is part of local habit here.
Menton is the furthest of our Riviera destinations from the airport: allow up to an hour at busy times.
The old town is climbed in stairways, and the panoramic cemetery has to be earned. The lower town, by contrast, is flat and entirely walkable.
