Beaulieu-sur-Mer is sheltered by a cliff that earned it the nickname Petite Afrique: the microclimate here is noticeably milder than anywhere else on the coast, which made its fortune in the winter-resort era. The town keeps a density of Belle Époque architecture rare for its size.
Its landmark is a single object: Villa Kérylos, built between 1902 and 1908 for the Hellenist Théodore Reinach, a scholarly reconstruction of a Greek house from the island of Delos, furnished and decorated to match. It is visited facing the sea, at the end of the Baie des Fourmis.

The sheltered bay where Villa Kérylos stands, with its planted promenade and pebble beach.
The basin and its quays, the centre of daily life in town, flat and a step from the station.
The pocket sheltered by the cliff, planted with subtropical species, where winter is the mildest on the coast.
The flat seaside path linking Beaulieu to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat in about twenty minutes.
The heights behind the town, reached by a steep path, with the widest view over the cape.
January - March
This is where the microclimate proves itself: the town is markedly milder than the rest of the coast, which explains its history as a winter resort.
April - June
The gardens and the seaside walk are at their best, before the summer crowds.
July - August
The town stays calm compared with Nice or Monaco, but parking and beach spots go early. The shelter of the cliff makes afternoons hot.
September - December
The sea stays warm late and the town returns to its residents’ rhythm. Wet spells concentrate in October and November.
All year
A reconstruction of an ancient Greek house, furnished and decorated, open on the Baie des Fourmis.
Winter
La Petite Afrique stays usable in midwinter: the seaside walk works in any season.
Summer
The summer programme runs on the harbour and in the gardens, at a deliberately local scale.
The town is flat and compact, with its station in the middle: one of the few places on the coast where you can stay without a car.
The Maurice Rouvier walk links Beaulieu to Cap-Ferrat at water level with no climb: the simplest route between the two communes.
The beaches are pebble, as almost everywhere between Nice and Menton. Sand here is the exception, not the rule.
