Discovering Villefranche-sur-Mer
Villefranche-sur-Mer owes everything to its bay, one of the deepest in the Mediterranean, which is why it long sheltered war fleets and why large ships still anchor there today. The town was founded in 1295 as a free port — hence its name — and its medieval plan has not moved since.
The old town is a handful of lanes on the hillside, including the Rue Obscure, vaulted over nearly a hundred and thirty metres, which has come through seven centuries intact. Below it, the Chapelle Saint-Pierre, decorated by Jean Cocteau in 1957, and Les Marinières, one of the few sandy beaches between Nice and Monaco.

Where to stay in Villefranche-sur-Mer
The old town
Stepped lanes, ochre façades and the Rue Obscure. Everything is done on foot, and everything is done uphill.
La Darse
The former naval harbour, away from the bustle, with its boatyards, its quay and the marine research institute.
Les Marinières
The sandy beach at the head of the bay, just below the station. The easiest in the area to reach without a car.
Citadelle Saint-Elme
The sixteenth-century fort, which now houses the museums and gardens open to the public.
The heights and Mont Alban
The wooded hills above the bay, between Nice and Villefranche, with the fort and the footpaths.
When to visit Villefranche-sur-Mer
April - June
The most pleasant season, with a calm bay, a usable beach and lanes you can still breathe in.
July - August
The beach and harbour fill up and ship calls multiply. The town stays small, and traffic gets awkward.
September - October
The best window, with warm sea, low light across the bay and numbers falling away from mid-September.
November - March
The town folds back onto its lived-in core. Essential shops stay open and the bay takes on its winter face, often the finest.

Good to know
The town is built on a steep slope, and between the upper streets and the beach, everything is stairs. Worth checking before choosing an address with luggage or reduced mobility.
The station sits metres from the beach on the coastal line, one of the few points on this coast where a car is genuinely optional.
The bay is a working anchorage. The view from the old town changes daily, and a ship sometimes fills the horizon.
