Discovering Saint-Paul-de-Vence

Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a fortified village in the hills behind Nice, ringed by ramparts raised in the sixteenth century under François I. Its Rue Grande crosses the village from one gate to the other in a few minutes, and the cemetery at the far end is where Marc Chagall is buried.

The village owes its singularity to a century of painters. La Colombe d’Or built its collection by accepting canvases in payment for meals, and the Maeght foundation, opened in 1964 on the neighbouring hill, was conceived with the artists themselves, with a Giacometti courtyard, a Miró labyrinth, mosaics and stained glass built into Josep Lluís Sert’s architecture. Ten minutes away, in Vence, the Chapelle du Rosaire was designed entirely by Matisse.

When to visit Saint-Paul-de-Vence

March - May

The best season, with green hills, the foundation gardens at their peak and a village you can still breathe in.

June - August

The village is saturated from eleven to five. Early morning and evening, it becomes what it is again, a place people live.

September - October

Low light, ripening olives and falling numbers. The regulars’ favourite window.

November - February

The village empties and some galleries close, but the foundation and the Matisse chapel remain the real reason to come.

The year in brief

  • All year

    The Maeght foundation

Opened in 1964, conceived with Giacometti, Miró, Chagall and Braque. The gardens are part of the collection.

  • All year

    The Chapelle du Rosaire, Vence

Matisse designed the architecture, the windows, the ceramics and even the vestments. Opening hours are reduced in winter.

  • Spring and autumn

    The village galleries

Rue Grande holds dozens of them. Out of season you can see them without crowds, and the doors stay open.

Good to know

  • The village is pedestrian, cobbled and steep, and you park below the ramparts and walk up.

  • This is a day-trip destination, and between eleven and five in season, Rue Grande is barely walkable. Staying here buys you the village at the hours when it is empty.

  • The sea is twenty minutes away. Saint-Paul is chosen for the hills and for the art, not for the beach.
